This causes Phelps to fall in love with her (at the cost of his marriage). But a German jazz singer, Elsa Lichtmann convinces him that it’s much more complicated than that. Phelps believes that he can change the world by arresting people who break the law. Monroe, Fontaine, the chief of police, the mayor of LA, the VP of California Fire & Life, and Meyer Cohen, the mob boss, are all in on this scheme together. Of course, Fontaine just gives it over to the mob while funding housing built by a land developer named Leland Monroe, who builds these GI houses out of wood used for sets on films (since they’re not strong enough for proper building materials). When they put the squeeze on Sheldon, he turns to a psychiatrist, Harlan Fontaine, who says he’ll sell the morphine to hospitals and use it to fund GI housing. Sheldon realizes he cannot sell the morphine himself and turns to the mob for help selling it. ![]() However, Sheldon’s attempt to do good is taken advantage of by those in power. They are systematically being murdered in order to scare Courtney Sheldon, who stole a supply of morphine to help those who fought in WWII get the financial security they deserve in. But ultimately, the morphine leads Phelps to a series of murders connected to his old company in the Marines. One of the cases on the desk only happens because Earle and the mob take a big loss on a boxer who was supposed to intentionally lose a bout. It’s on the vice desk that Phelps finally realizes what LA’s police department is really for. Earle openly expresses racism and misogyny, complaining about being assigned cases in which African Americans have overdosed on morphine-to which the vice chief replies not about the fact that their lives matter too (this is why “Black Lives Matter” is the call for action of contemporary civil rights), but that the case involves government-issue morphine, and that’s what makes it an important vice case. While Earle convinces Phelps this is a promotion, he quickly learns that Earle and the vice squad are as dirty as dirty cops come. ![]() Unfortunately, the LAPD cannot publicly admit the mistake of arresting five innocent men, and you’re told that they would create false cases of “mishandled” or “missing” evidence in order to exonerate them.Īfter this, Phelps’ old friend Roy Earle pulls strings to get Phelps as his partner on the vice squad. Eventually, Phelps gets proof that there is one person behind all of the killings, but once he’s finally subdued, the homicide chief informs you that the case is going to disappear, because this person is connected to politicians high in the state level. The homicide desk section of the game plays with the idea that you may be hunting the Black Dahlia killer, but end up taking in people who are innocent of their crimes, merely because that’s what’s demanded of an LAPD officer. Things only get worse from there, as Phelps’ “golden boy” sheen carries him through the ranks of the LAPD. Part of the case has you uncovering hidden cameras in Marlon Hopgood’s sound stage that’s supposedly used for “casting.” But before you can take him in, Roy Earle, the head detective of the vice squad, steps in, claiming Hopgood to be a vice informant. looking for stardom, he begins to understand just how far-reaching capitalist exploitation goes. However, with the last case on the desk, where Phelps has to find out the truth of what happens to young women that come to L.A. While working the traffic desk, he’s able to turn “hot” pink slips into busting a national auto-theft ring and a stolen diplomatic vehicle into busting both the thief and uncovering that an Argentinian diplomat is a pedophile. Even the game’s supposed hero and player-character, Cole Phelps, is eventually done in by those who use the justice system for mere profit.Īs Phelps works his way through the various “desks” (traffic, homicide, vice, arson) of the game, he learns how powerful the machine is and eventually that he can’t dismantle it alone. ![]() Noire’s overarching plot isn’t historically accurate, it does try to expand on how individuals are at the mercy of capitalism during the post-World War II economic boom. The process that the company was attempting to patent was dangerous, so they were testing it in a building located in an area primarily populated by minorities: meaning that the PR due to loss of life would be lessened by whose life was lost if anything were to go wrong (5 of the 17 killed in the explosion were African American, and the entire block was leveled). The case, “Nicholson Electroplating,” is based on the real perchloric acid explosion at O’Connor Electro-Plating Company.

Mars performed "Count on Me" on television shows such as The Ellen DeGeneres Show and included it on both of his worldwide tours The Doo-Wops & Hooligans Tour (2010–12) and once on the Moonshine Jungle Tour (2013–14). It was certified three and two times platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), respectively. The single peaked at number two in the Czech Republic and it was able to reach the position of 19 in Australia and 13 in New Zealand. ![]() Some music critics noted the resemblance to "Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, praising its arrangement and "uplifting" vibe, others criticized its "saccharine sound" and cheesy lyrics. even reading his lyrics i get the full experience of the song. It received generally mixed to positive reviews. i could pretty much tell by the song what the lyrics were but omg bruno mars is amazing. Musically, "Count on Me" is a folk and tropical record that lyrically details the importance of friendship and convey a positive message. ![]() It was composed by Mars, Philip Lawrence, and Ari Levine, under their alias, The Smeezingtons. The song was released as a radio single in Australia and served as the overall sixth single from Doo-Wops & Hooligans, being serviced to contemporary hit radio and adult contemporary radio in Australia on November 7, 2011. The song was first unveiled on Mars' debut extended play, It's Better If You Don't Understand (2010). "Count on Me" is a song by American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars from his debut studio album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010). They are probably the weakest character themes melodically, but still add to the diversity of Street Fighter II. Other culturally inspired tracks were written for Japanese sumo-wrestler E. The gliding melody is an ingenious representation of the female fighter and sounds even better than before with the revised synth. Moving on to culturally inspired tracks, Chun-Li's Chinese-influenced theme is back. It's rich with Isao Abe's peppy jazz fusion work and also has a slight industrial tinge. Cammy's theme, on the other hand, is a relatively fresh addition, having featured in just the Super Street Fighter II soundtrack previously. All these themes are similar to their Street Fighter II originals except with slightly modified, though still relatively low quality, Arcade synth. The inappropriate but endearing themes for Zangief and Blanka also return and sound as groovy as ever. It's a pretty effective depiction of a lone wolf. Guile's theme holds many similarities to Ryu's, but distinguishes itself with a methodical bass riff. The rocking melody is pretty good too and nicely reflects the character's American origins. Ken's stage probably has the most memorable opening riff of any game music piece. However, Yoko Shimomura develops it brilliantly and tempts listeners to whistle along. Written in the spirit of old-school game music, the melody is quite poppy and quirky. Ryu's theme is the first character theme featured on the disc. But are character themes alone a satisfying representation of Street Fighter's music or did Capcom's reductionist approach go a little too far? Body ![]() ![]() There are absolutely no fanfares, ending themes, voice collections, or sound effects tracks to clutter the experience. They remedy these problems somewhat on this album by limiting the track selection to just the character themes. Capcom's soundtrack release for Super Street Fighter II was rightly criticised for featuring short track times and far too much superfluous material. This music features all the character themes from the last main version of Street Fighter II to be released on Arcades, Super Street Fighter II Turbo. ![]() Capcom's attempts to create a perfect Street Fighter II soundtrack release concluded with the magazine bonus Super Street Fighter II X Sound Complete. ![]() A new 4K Blu-ray player is well within the price range for most movie lovers, and its a great upgrade to future-proof your home collection. Now that 4K Blu-ray is a few years along, pricing of both the players and the discs themselves are coming down drastically. Almost every title you watch in 4K Blu-ray is like seeing your favorites for the first time. Storied classics like Apocalypse Now and 2001: A Space Odyssey look absolutely stunning in 4K Blu-ray, while modern titles like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe offer definite upgrades over their DVD and Blu-ray counterparts. Most new popular titles are available in 4K Blu-ray, and more and more classic titles are being announced all the time. But 4K Blu-ray is established enough now that title selection is really picking up steam. Title selection is growing quicklyĮvery time a new format is adopted, it seems like the studios are slow to roll out titles, especially beloved catalog titles like The Wizard of Oz. Studios will also bring the original filmmakers in to consult on the remastering and HDR grading of new 4K Blu-rays, which means you are truly seeing these films the way they were meant to be seen. The newer 4K Blu-ray is a vast improvement over the older muddy-looking Blu-ray with lossy sound. One major example of this was Mission: Impossible, a title that came out early in the age of Blu-ray. ![]() ![]() Upgrading to 4K gives these neglected titles a new lease on life because in most instances the studio has to go back and remaster them for the 4K format. Studios often re-package titles with older masters in new packaging when they re-release them in stores. Sadly, sometimes these early release cycle titles don’t necessarily get remastered later in the life cycle of formats, even Blu-ray. Sometimes they used older masters, employed older compression techniques like MPEG-2 (versus more efficient and higher-quality MPEG-4 AVC H.265/HEVC codecs) or used older lossy sound formats like Dolby Digital. It was often true that in the early days of both DVD and Blu-ray, the first titles out in those formats didn’t necessarily look or sound as great as they should have. 4K is truly a cinephile’s dream! 4K titles improve upon older masters That gives you a true representation of what the filmmaker intended you to see (and hear). When studios go back and scan original negatives for a 4K Blu-ray release, you are seeing more clarity than you’d find in a highly-duplicated film print in theaters. In fact, many recent 4K Blu-ray restorations present the film even better than when it was first projected in theaters. With most titles, and especially classics shot on film, 4K really brings out the depth and detail of film that you’ve never seen at home before. Older “lossy” formats found on DVDs and streaming platforms sound pale in comparison. ![]() Newer lossless audio formats like DTS-HD Master Audio and “object-based” surround sound formats like Dolby Atmos further heighten the realism and rival the real theater experience, truly immersing the viewer in three-dimensional sound. The picture quality is four times sharper than standard Blu-ray (and many times that of DVD), and high dynamic range (HDR) more closely recreates the range of brightness and color the human eye sees. Sound is often also highly compressed in streaming formats.ĤK Blu-ray preserves the picture and sound quality intended by the filmmakers, often rivaling the presentations found in your neighborhood movie theater. It may not be obvious in every scene, but you are more likely to notice less vibrant colors, pixelation or blocking and other compression-related anomalies with streaming titles. No matter how robust your Internet speeds are, there is a lot of compression applied to get it down the pipe. But there are a lot of factors that seriously impact the quality that reaches your TV. Here are some good reasons to make the jump to 4K Blu-ray: Picture and sound qualityĭon’t get us wrong - streaming movies online, even ones purchased for your personal movie collection, are certainly convenient. While it seems like streaming digital movies are the future of home video, reports of the death of physical media, to quote Mark Twain, “have been greatly exaggerated.” You may have noticed the selection of DVDs and Blu-rays shrinking on store shelves, but there are very real advantages to purchasing Blu-rays even now, especially with 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays becoming more common. ![]() These important and legitimate government interests are afforded to cities through the police powers granted by the California Constitution.” “This vesting will cripple local governments’ ability to regulate land use and zoning and to preserve the character and aesthetic of cities. ![]() ![]() “(The Hobbs) argue for the creation of a new vested property right allowing for the continued use of their property as a short-term vacation rental,” the amicus brief reads. The league made it clear on its position in the case, submitting that if the court found for the Hobbs it would allow for an entirely new kind of property right. Among other things, it advocates for maintaining local authority over zoning and land use. The League of California Cities represents 472 cities in California. “(The League of California Cities) has identified this case as having such significance because a finding that a time-limited, short-term vacation rental license creates a vested interest subject to due process protections would have a wide, sweeping effect on cities throughout the state,” the league’s amicus brief states. The Hobbs have argued that Pacific Grove’s refusal to renew a short-term license violates their due process rights. The League of California Cities and Pacific Grove Neighbors United, a nonprofit group that was instrumental in having short-term rentals more regulated in Pacific Grove, both filed amicus briefs. The most recent filings were a pair of amici curiae - Latin for “friend of the court.” An amicus brief is filed by someone who is not a party to a case but that can assist a court by offering information, expertise or insight that has a bearing on the case. Goldwater appealed to the appellate court. The Hobbs lost their case when Monterey County Superior Court Judge Lydia Villarreal in 2019 dismissed the Goldwater Institute’s allegation since the short-term rental licensing agreement clearly stated that the term of the license was for 12 months and there was no guarantee of renewal. The case is being reviewed by a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal, Sixth Appellate District, in San Jose. Numerous email requests for comment sent to the attorneys for Goldwater were not returned by The Herald’s deadline Monday.īoth sides have finished their filings and now await word of a date for oral arguments to begin. The Hobbs are being represented by the Goldwater Institute, a conservative Arizona think tank, which is arguing that there was no reason for what they consider an arbitrary denial since the city uses a lottery system to choose which licenses will not be renewed to eliminate many of the short-term rentals in the city. The current case involves Susan and William Hobbs, a Pacific Grove couple who filed a lawsuit against the city in the summer of 2019 in Monterey County Superior Court, alleging that Pacific Grove denied their due process rights by refusing to renew a short-term rental license the Hobbs possessed. The case is important because it could be a stepping stone to a review by the California Supreme Court and could determine the limitations Pacific Grove, or any other California city, have in their ability to regulate vacation rentals.
